has anyone ever used the fibers of a hickory tree for cordage? i mean, it is srong, workable and doesn't need to be corded all the time. another use for the awsome tree that is hickory!

never tried hickory... I should though. Sadly there's not much around this part of Ontario... gotta keep my eyes out!

hickory bark

Postby paul vallandigham on Tue Oct 31, 2006 12:57 am

Hickory bark is pretty tight to the tree, and not as easy to separate from the tree even after the tree is dead, and dried. I have heard of it being used for caning seats of chairs, in 1/2 " wide or so strips, but I don't think I have heard of anyone making cord out of it. you might check the Foxfire books.

no, I have used it. and i am not refering to the bark, though the inner bark works, i meant the tree itself. when i split out aa tree, i got a thin peice and when i beant it in there were a bunc of fibers. they made awsome cord.

Hickory is cool stuff! Tough and wirey!
Its lighter to take a full head than a full pack!
