Klean Kanteen

Postby coon4492 on Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:42 pm

I was wondering what peoples opinions are on this company. They make stainless steel water bottles that look alot like those sigg aluminum ones. I heard they were more durable than nalgenes plastic bottles and siggs aluminum ones plus I heard you can put a fire under them and boil water. I like the shape alot better than the military canteen shape but I was wondering if they have any major flaws?

Looks like it (stainless steel bottle) has a thin single wall, that's good because it means that it is lighter. I just don't like the plastic screw tops that all of them seem to have. You will have to wait for the bottle to cool down significantly after you boil water before you can put the plastic top back on or risk melting it. The metal will also need to cool and contract to have the top fit back on the neck. As the metal heats up it will expand. As for this particular company, I have no idea.

I have a couple of the smaller ones - 12 oz. I think. I purchased two to have a balanced belt. I have plastic caps with a seal. The problem here is heat rather than cold (too bad). I fill them half way with water and freeze them to carry cold water. I did pooch out the bottom slightly on one - expansion of water causing the air pressure to rise I'm sure. I have had no taste issues. I would be reluctant to use one to boil water, but in an emergency...

yea sounds like it would be ruined after you used it to boil water once. I just don't get why anyone would make a canteen out of stainless steel and not have it able to be used to boil water! Oh well I can always use my boonie hat to boil water it would probably work better than the Klean Kanteen. I actually saw that in a survivorman episode. Les boiled water using his boonie hat and some hot rocks it worked too. I gotta try that sometime.

pretty obvious really, they dont consider it. since its a so called "green" canteen, its probably designed by former hippies that smoked 4 pounds of weed, get lost in the woods and call themselves druids.

Wallmart has their stainless bottles on sale for $5. They were back in the camping section on and end display at my store.

$5 is the cheapist I have seen the stainless bottles. These have the plastic screw stopper and lip, but if worse came to worse I would still cook in it and whittle a wooden stopper if the plastic melted.
OK, what's the other plan!
