Fire from a hot hands packet

Postby coon4492 on Wed Feb 04, 2009 9:13 pm

Hey anyone ever use one of those hot hands the disposable hand warmers to build a fire. They get really really hot after awhile it seems like it could be used as a heat source. I was going to get one as hot as I could possibly get it and throw it in a tinder bundle. I like to consult the forum first when I get these ideas just to see if I'm about to waste my time. If this does start a fire sucessfully I'm keeping a pack of these hand warmers in a survival kit.

If you are going to carry something, on purpose, to make fire why not a

!!! LIGHTER !!!

or matches oe a spark rod.

Why carry a less effective device rather than a more effective device?

Use your head kid.
OK, what's the other plan!

Well i already do keep a lighter and matches in my survival kit 2 lighters one of them is a flashlight lighter combo the other is just a regular lighter. I keep 3 small match boxes in there as well I was taught to always have a backup for everything. The only reason I posted this is because I use these hot hands for hunting and there an easy way to warm up your hands without having to build a fire but I figured it produces so much heat it could double as another backup firestarter as well.

Believe these heat pads based on catylytic oxidation of iron powder. Theoretically, should get to glow if blow air (oxygen) onto powder.

It is fun science by the way it also worked I got one of those packs really hot and put it in dry tinder and as It began to heat the tinder up I added oxygen and I got a fire so add that as another way to make a fire.

The MRE ration heaters are fun too. It's a pouch you add water to, and it generates heat and hydrogen gas. Careful, it's flammable. ;)

Perhaps you could try all the different methods of starting a fire and then enter into Guiness Book of Records.
How many methods do you think there are?

I couldn't even guess a number of how many ways there are to start a fire.

i always have a lighter or matches with me, that is, i did until they made it illegal for anone under 18 to buy a lighter. now i carry one whenever i can. i also have glasses, so its even easier. i try to make up for my inability to make fire with a bow drill. 8)

I keep a magnesium fire starter on me now its pretty reliable and easy to use not as easy as a lighter but I don't get into any trouble for having it like i would with a lighter. I'm getting better with the bow drill king soon we will master it.
