i prefer a debris shelter too. if the wind changes constantly on day one, it wont help you much on day two.

The lean-to has always been an alterable shelter Dixie. Larry Dean Olsen, Mors Kochanski, the SAS Survival guide... Heck, read Ray Mear's book called "Bushcraft", he shows a couple versions.

The type you seem to describe is the Open Lean-to, I've only seen these successfully used in warm weather. Up here most lean-tos are built with; an elevated bed, enclosed sides to cut out drafts, a fire placed one long step away, a reflecter wall (made of logs, rock, mylar space blanket, etc), and other small adjustments.

now those lean to's work well when those things are added. It takes slightly less time to add those to a lean to then it does to build a debris hut
