New shelter

Postby LDS on Wed May 27, 2009 2:30 pm

I broke down and ordered a new primitive shelter today. The wife says she is not living in a brush hut until Obama makes her live in one! That may not be long at the present rate. Still, the survival retreat is paid for and well stocked so we are good for a while.

The primitive shelter is purly for reenactment purposes. I ordered a bell back wedge tent from Panther Primitives. This one is smaller than the big tent and bigger than the small tent. We can run a foot race inside it by my standards but the wife refers to it as "adequite". It is an A frame, 10' x 16' and 8' tall.

We will use it for what she calls our "Small camp", meaning we only take one truck load of gear instead of the truck and trailer.

It should be here in 2-3 weeks. I really must learn to do pictures on this machine. I have some good ones of my young hoodlums with their atal-atals and primitive weapons from last year. This year we are doing traps and snares.
OK, what's the other plan!

Oooo. New digs. High tech. LOL I am sure it will make life more bearable around the Mrs. than a brush hut. Yeah. I thought about doing some pics to show here and still might. Maybe some firebow sets, natural cords, plants, and such. Look forward to seeing yours, LDS.

The Good Wife actually bought the tent with her bonus money this year. I just did the leg work and kept my mouth shut. she also snagged herself a new camera of hi-tech nature, which means I inherited the old one, which is way more hi-tech than my old Kodak Brownie.

I am just not one of those people that really understands "connect the asb plug to the qrs module and insert it into the f drive backwards, hold you breath and hope no burning smells happen"

I know those commercials where the 3 year old does it are a set up! They have to be a set up. I'll bet their mouse is not even plugged in and some teckie wizard is controlling the machine off camera!

If your trying to post pictures on the forum try this. Create a photobucket.com account and upload your pictures there. Photobucket should give the picture a url. Copy and paste that url in between this symbol to get this to come up click the Img button at the top.

Those are nice. I want a new canvas tent- probably a Baker.
Its lighter to take a full head than a full pack!

I'm trying to get away with hauling only a few poles, the Baker takes a bunch and is as hard to set up as my wall tent. I was wanting something that took only three poles and would go up in the 5 minutes the wedge requires, but still had enough room for the 4 poster bed and chandiler.

We're cutting back and roughing it.

Okay. I saw a new ad flier from K-Mart. I just could not resist the small backpack dome tent I saw on sale so I went down to the store. Northwest Territory dome tent (8X7.5 ft.) I think with a rain fly. Will sleep up to three if you cram a third person in (really for one or two) but never know when I might need a tent so it was worth it for $25. Also got a small lightweight fleece sleeping bag (rated down to 45 deg.) for $13. It do get cold in Florida. Can go to freezing (32 deg.) but won't stay there long so I could always throw a fleece lined hoodie on for double warmth if need be and if I ever use them. I really don't plan on using them unless I need to so I won't be carrying them with me, just stuck in the house in case I might need them.

lol yea brillant I was bundled up for winter this kids wearing camo shorts  Yea we get surprisingly cold winters the temperature is usually 15 to 20 degrees and the summer tends to stay in the 75 to 80 degree range. If I build a shelter in the winter it ends up being really warm but I never want to use it in the summer :D

You live here long enough and the heat will thin your blood too. 32 degrees is not cold for the Georgia mountains and I used to be up there all the time. It would go down to the teens, zero, or just below up there and I got used to it (the blood gets thicker). But 32 degrees is cold for Florida. On the contrary, I like the cold weather.
