Apache foot hold

Wildwood covers alot of good simple traps but they left out the apache foothold. Did they not want to teach people about a trap that could hold large game like deer because that would make sense. Who else thinks the apache foothold trap deserves to be on this website? hell if they need pictures of it i could supply them with that.

yea thats the trap although reading their description and looking at the diagram they obviously never used it. Its a very reliable trap that can hold any kind of game from large to small depending on how big you make the hole and snare. The stakes aren't really to hold the animal in the hole permenantly but for a few moments enough for the animal to struggle and get the snare tight around the leg. After it gets its leg snared it gets out of the hole and trys to run. Its very important the rope is tied to a strong tree if the rope is strong and your knots are good it will hold any game for as long as you need to. Just approach it with caution the deer or other animal will have some room to run but not much. Its the primitive version of modern spring coil foothold traps.

I have seen this trap before, but I have never heard of anyone trying it. Have you actually caught any large game in it? Then, I guess you have to kill it without getting too close. Thoughts?

:D oh I've got plenty of large game traps you can use so the question is how big of an animal do you want to trap? Are we talking elk or moose size? or slightly smaller than that? Theres a neat dead fall trap that uses a trip wire and drops a log down on the animal its a bit dangerous to set but it will definantly work on large game animals. I could send you a diagram or some pictures if you want to try it.

I was watching a special the other night and they were showing how the poachers in Africa used snares made from steel cable to hold large game until the poacher could come back and dispatch it. Simple leg hold snares that were not intended to kill, just to restrain.

If it would work on a kudu it would probably work on deer, elk or moose.

Saw a report on PBS about two guys studying grizzly in Alaska. they were using leg hold snares too. They would tranquilize the bears and install radio collars.

One got after them and they had to shoot it. They were disapointed over having to do so but realistic enough to know it had to be done. You have to be in close proximity to do their work and it is only a matter if time before one of then taks a run at you. One of them was carrying a 12ga pump gun and the other a rifle, the caliber i do not remember.

I think theres a moral to that story always carry a gun capable of killing a bear. Might not be a bad thing to carry a 30.06 rifle or something if you are using these large game traps.
